Within short films, directors usually stick with 2-3 characters. This is the case as the short amount of time the media is shown for, if there was an excess of characters, then the viewer would struggle to make a connection with any of the involved characters.
Story Line:
In order for a short film to be a success, there must be a norm within the story line, however there must also be a twist. This twist must be dramatic enough to shock the viewer and keep them interested. In my short film, I have made the twist the girl being revived at the end. Furthermore, the alternative endings offered to the viewer can be classified as a twist.
Short films also more often than not take an everyday situation, and then introduces the twist within it to make the viewing experience better and more interesting for the consumer. By making the storyline based on an everyday situation, the consumer can relate to the content more easily. (In my film, this is the girl who is depressed and is going to commit suicide).
Budget:
Budget's are often low for short films, as investment is often low. This is the case, as the return for the creation of the product is often not similar to the amount invested. This being said, if a short film is very successful and wins awards at the likes of the Cannes film festival, then it will get good exposure amongst the public and get more views.
Length:
Short films are traditionally between 5-10 minutes long. The brief states that the piece has to be five minutes of length, and so as a result fits into this category.
A theorist who is largely used when looking at this style of film is Todorov. Todorov states that a film must have an equilibrium, a disequilibrium and then finish with a new equilibrium. This is present within my short film, with the new equilibrium being the girl getting revived at the end.
